Working in South Africa

We have been recruiting and helping people find the best employment in South Africa for 11 years with great success. However, there is a procedure to be followed, and once we have all the documents mentioned below, your application at Home Affairs will be dealt with in a fast and efficient way.

Should you decide to take up employment in South Africa all certificates or degrees have to be verified by SAQA (The South African Qualification Authority) before we can apply for any positions.  It is for this very reason that companies do not get involved with offering employment to non-residents. This evaluation can take up to 90 days and there is a cost involved. Once we have received clearance from SAQA we can start the recruitment process.

Documents required for evaluation are as follows;

To minimise the risk of loss of or damage to original qualification documents, copies of these are acceptable in most cases, but must be completely legible and certified true copies, preferably by a diplomatic office representing the country of origin of the qualification holder. Copies will be retained for record purposes. All original qualification documents (and only original documents) will be returned by registered mail.

CEEQ (Centre for the Evaluation of Educational Qualifications’) reserves the right to request original documents and/or have the authenticity of documents verified by the relevant authorities in the countries of origin. If falsified documents are submitted, no evaluation will be issued, no refund will be made, the designees for the evaluation will be notified and the information shared with the relevant authorities and with any third parties that the evaluation results were intended for.

Certificates in foreign languages must be accompanied by sworn translations into English. Note that both the document in the original language and the translation are needed.

Primary and secondary schooling:

School leaving certificates / results must be issued by the official examining bodies in the countries of origin.

Higher education:

Complete and legible academic records / transcripts / subject lists are needed in respect of all higher education qualifications.

Final certificates must be submitted. If these are not available, an official statement (issued by the awarding body) must confirm completion of all the requirements for the award of the particular qualification, as well

as the prospective date of the award.

Postgraduate / other advanced qualifications must be accompanied either by preceding qualifications, or

the awarding institutions must officially state the grounds for admission to the programmes involved.

  1. What do SAQA staff do at SAQA?

The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), which came into being through the promulgation of the SAQA Act (RSA, 1995), is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of the NQF.

  1. Why do we do RPL(Recognition of Prior Learning)?

Here are some of the reasons why RPL is done:

To redress the historical disadvantages like exclusion of many people from education and training because of regulations used by institutions, exclusion from certain jobs of certain population groups, etc.

  • To validate people’s skills and knowledge for broader development of individuals

  • To facilitate access to jobs and progression in career paths

  • For recognition in terms of grading and pay/salary

  • For planning through skills audits

  • To promote employment equity

  1. If I cannot speak English, can I go for RPL?

Yes, there will be an additional charge for translations of your degrees/diplomas/transcripts.

  1. What are the criteria applied for evaluation of foreign qualification?

The evaluation of foreign qualifications follows international practice as agreed to by countries in the European region and which is outlined in the Lisbon Convention of 1997.

Evaluations aim to determine the "local currency" of foreign qualifications. The evaluation procedure is based mainly on the structural analysis of foreign education systems and the attributes of qualifications obtained in these, compared to the South African context in terms of indicators such as –

  • status of the awarding institution in the country of origin

  • purpose of study

  • admission requirements

  • duration and mode of study

  • credit weighting and grades

  • course composition and requirements

  • learning outcomes as indicated by the professional and/or academic status of the qualification holder

  • qualification framework levels in the country of origin (if applicable)

SAQA evaluations offer general placement recommendations, which should preferably be supplemented by purpose-specific assessments by the institution(s) concerned.

  1. What is the legal status of these evaluations?

The evaluation of foreign qualifications used to be assigned to the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in the HSRC Act, Act 23 of 1968. The function was transferred to the South African Qualifications Authority as a going concern with effect from 1 July 1999. The service is fully operational and revised on an ongoing basis to fully align with NQF principles and best international practice.

The recommendations made on certificates of evaluation are advisory in nature and not prescriptive or binding on other institutions.

  1. What are the SAQA Trademarks?

  • South African Qualifications Authority

  • SAQA

  • South African Qualifications Authority together with the Q device

  • National Qualifications Framework

  • NQF

How to import your vehicle to South Africa.

You require an import permit from ITAC and letter of authority from SABS.

Cars may only be imported duty free into South Africa with proof of permanent residence. Should you enter the country on a Temporary permit 50% import duties will apply.

SOUTH AFRICAN BUREAU OF STANDARDS and INTERNATIONAL TRADE ADMINISTRATION COMMISSION OF SOUTH AFRICA

SOUTH AFRICAN BUREAU OF STANDARDS

For SABS a Letter of Authority is required ;

The Letter of Authority (LOA)

A Letter of Authority must be obtained by any person or organisation wishing to :

  • import a new or used vehicle (passenger vehicle, goods vehicle or trailer) into South Africa;
  • build or modify a vehicle.

A LOA must be obtained irrespective of whether the vehicle was built in SA or a foreign country.

Types of vehicles for which a LOA is required

  • Passenger vehicles (cars, buses and motor cycles)
  • Goods vehicles (trucks or vans)
  • Trailers
  • Special vehicles such as mobile cranes, tractors, harvesters

Conformity of vehicles

All vehicles whether manufactured in SA or imported, must conform to the requirements for vehicles as set out in the Road Traffic Act, and importers must supply proof of conformity to the SABS

The requirements for vehicles are in general aligned with European requirements, ie the applicable regulations and directives of the EEC. These are similar to those used in the ECE. Importers of foreign vehicles are strongly advised to consult the SABS to determine the specific requirements for their vehicle/s. This is particularly important for vehicles that are

  • Left hand drive; or
  • that originate in countries outside of Europe, such as the Americas, the Far East and Australasia.

INTERNATIONAL TRADE ADMINISTRATION COMMISSION OF SOUTH AFRICA

It is in conflict with ITAC policy to post import permits to addresses outside the Republic of South Africa, therefore you have to furnish a South African address to which your permit can be forwarded.

The purpose of applying import control is to promote local economic activities and job creation.

Passenger vehicles, mini-buses, buses/coaches, light, medium and heavy commercial vehicles are manufactured/assembled in South Africa. About 90 000 people are employed in assembly and component manufacturing and this sector contributes about 10% of total manufacturing in South Africa. In view of the importance of this sector, strict control is applied to the importation of used vehicles and import permits are issued only in very specific and defined circumstances.

This permit is only issued with proof of permanent residence in South Africa.

These documents have to be submitted in Pretoria, Gauteng. We will advise you correctly and submit the documents on your behalf.
